Why are people bothering to ask "why" they should help Haiti?

It makes me angry how some of the kids at my school are like "Why should we help them? They were already struggling. What difference does it make that there was an earthquake?" Um, hello! It's the right thing to do! And how someone said those people are bad for looting and stealing, and they don't understand that they have to do it! It's an act of desperation. I'm not trying to be racist or call anyone out, but it seems like a lot of white kids at my school who come from upper-cl families think that way.
