What backs up the U.S. monetary system,gold. why do we have to borrow money from china?

Although the United States does hold a lot of gold, there is no official reserve realtionship between the dollar and gold. We don't have to borrwo money form China. We borrow money from anyone who is interested in holding US Treasury securities. right now they are deemed to be the safest investments in the world.
